Does GPT-3 qualify as a co-author of a scientific paper publishable in peer-review journals according to the ICMJE criteria? A case study

Abstract This paper explores the potential for a system to be co-author on an academic based criteria proposed by International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). We used third generation generative pretrained transformer (GPT-3) write review topic its choice: The Effects Sleep Deprivation Cognitive Function. was asked fulfill four main co-authorship as recommended ICMJE, which includes contributions conception or design work; drafting work revising it critically important intellectual content; final approval version published; and agreement accountable all aspects work. Our results showed that able criteria, with significant difficulties accurate reliable referencing. also explored ethical implications using AI systems research found is take cautious approach when considering use scientific authorship. case study provides methodology further investigations into possibilities limitations automated writing.
